Several people shared their time, knowledge, and personal histories in ways that went well beyond a standard guided visit.

Dr. László Grünfeld Guide, Mauthausen Memorial — 21 May 2026 Dr. Grünfeld led the tour of the Mauthausen Memorial and subsequently accompanied me to two Holocaust memorials at the University of Vienna. A photographer by practice, he also contributed the ten black-and-white photographs in the Mauthausen gallery on this site. His approach — minimal narration, maximum space for the visitor to encounter the site directly — shaped how I thought about the relationship between guiding and remembering for the rest of the trip.
Mr Deter Tour Guide, Good Vienna Tours — 20 May 2026 Led the guided walking tour of Hitler's Vienna — twelve sites in central Vienna tracing the city as Hitler experienced it between 1908 and 1913, and as he remade it after the Anschluss of 1938.
Ms Etela Museum Educator, Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava (SNM) — 25 May 2026 Conducted a private guided tour of the museum's permanent exhibitions and paused to share her own reflections on why the history of Bratislava's Jewish quarter matters for the next generation. Her words are transcribed on the museum's gallery page.
Mr Michal Vaněk Director, Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava (SNM) — 25 May 2026 Took the time to discuss the museum's work and its place in the international network of Holocaust education and research. His recommendation to study the Slovak Jewish Codex — the 1941 legal instrument by which Slovak Jews were stripped of their rights — directly shaped subsequent research.
Mr Braňo Co-founder, Authentic Slovakia — 27 May 2026 Led the Post-Communist Bratislava walking tour in a vintage Škoda Favorit, tracing the architectural and ideological imprint of the communist era on the city — and the ways in which that regime completed the erasure of a Jewish quarter already hollowed out by wartime deportation.
